Phineas Gage, holding the iron rod that was blown through his skull by an errant dynamite blast. It passed behind his left eye and up through his brain. He lived for 12 years after the accident, and the rod never left his side.
Why this guy is not a member of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is beyond me.
